چکیده
The non-equivalence between the metric and Palatini formalisms of f(R) gravity is an intriguing feature of these theories. However, in the recently proposed hybrid metric-Palatini gravity, consisting of the superposition of the metric Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian with an f(R) term constructed à la Palatini, the “true” gravitational field is described by the interpolation of these two non-equivalent approaches. The theory predicts the existence of a light long-range scalar field, which passes the local constraints and affects the galactic and cosmological dynamics. Thus, the theory opens new possibilities for a unified approach, in the same theoretical framework, to the problems of dark energy and dark matter, without distinguishing a priori matter and geometric sources, but taking their dynamics into account under the same standard. keywords: modified gravity, late-time cosmic acceleration, dark matter, Solar System tests PACS numbers: 04.50.Kd, 04.20.Cv Electronic address: [email protected] Electronic address: [email protected] Electronic address: [email protected] Electronic address: [email protected]

A covariant scalar-tensor-vector gravity theory is developed which allows the gravitational constant G, a vector field coupling ω and the vector field mass μ to vary with space and time. The equations of motion for a test particle lead to a modified gravitational acceleration law that can fit galaxy rotation curves and cluster data without non-baryonic dark matter. The theory is consistent with...
متن کاملAcceleration from Modified Gravity: Lessons from Worked Examples
I examine how two specific examples of modified gravity explanations of cosmic acceleration help us understand some general problems confronting cosmological tests of gravity: how do we distinguish modified gravity from dark energy if they can be made formally equivalent? how do we parameterize deviations according to physical principles with sufficient generality, yet focus cosmological tests ...
متن کاملA ug 2 00 3 Modified gravity with negative and positive powers of the curvature : unification of the inflation and of the cosmic acceleration
The modified gravity, which eliminates the need for dark energy and which seems to be stable, is considered. The terms with positive powers of the curvature support the inflationary epoch while the terms with negative powers of the curvature serve as effective dark energy, supporting current cosmic acceleration. The equivalent scalar-tensor gravity may be compatible with the simplest solar syst...
متن کاملGeneralized f ( R , φ , X ) Gravity and the Late - Time Cosmic Acceleration
High-precision observational data have confirmed with startling evidence that the Universe is currently undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion. This phase, one of the most important and challenging current problems in cosmology, represents a new imbalance in the governing gravitational equations. Historically, physics has addressed such imbalances by either identifying sources that were pr...
متن کاملDifferentiating between Modified Gravity and Dark Energy
The nature of the fuel that drives today’s cosmic acceleration is an open and tantalizing mystery. We entertain the suggestion that the acceleration is not the manifestation of yet another new ingredient in the cosmic gas tank, but rather a signal of our first real lack of understanding of gravitational physics. By requiring that the underlying gravity theory respects Birkhoff’s law, we derive ...
